Black History Month: Hero Qualities

When I talk about heros, I don’t meen Batman or Superman, I’m talking about real life heros, Ghandi, Mandela, King. Many of our modern day heros have similar characteristics. Some are the ability to lead, the power to make people believe with you and help you in your fight, and the ability to stand up for what is right and what you believe in. When you look back in time you see all these characteristics in those heros, and you see them in modern day heros as well.

“Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.”

William Ernest Henley

The poem “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley descibes a hero that would not give up no mater what. That is another great quality of all heros.
